very pleased with this ball vise I'll use for engraving
surprisingly good ball vise I plan to use for engraving.I would rate this as a very good value comparable to the units costing $400 - $500.I've received this ball vise from the company dbm-inc covered in a light coating of oil, that only took 60 seconds or so to wipe off.The vise was well packed and I am glad it had the protective oil coating so surface rust didn't form while it was on the distributor's shelf. It arrived 5 days after ordering. I'm on the west coast, faster than what was estimated. There is a rubber support ring that the ball vise sits in, which is dry, not lubricated, so that it keeps the ball vise from rotating or moving. The top half of the ball vise rotates easily or can be locked as one chooses by a locking nut on the side of the ball vise. The top half rotation is very smooth, almost like it's rotating on ball bearings, but I don't know this for sure, it's just my description of how smooth the rotation is. I did have to unscrew the rotation lock nut a couple of extra turns to allow the top third of the vise to rotate 360 degrees freely. The hold down / pin accessory kit seems like it will work but some of the parts appear to be chrome plated and I worry that the plating might come off. This should not be a deturent for me as I see the value in the ball vise and in the worse case scenario I can make my own hold down pins and is why I rate this vise 5 stars. Again this is just my observation of the hold downs, not from long time use.UPDATE: the vise does have ball bearings in it for the top half to rotate. I took the 'locking' nut all the way out and the top half of the ball vise can then be removed. One does not need to replace the grease, but I did just because I had some waterproof grease for my bicycle at hand.

It's a good vice for a hobbiest or beginner
So this is not a high end GRS or Lindsay level quality but for the price it's great for a beginner or someone who is just engraving as a hobby. I read a lot of forums and reviews and half the people said these were total junk and to the pro who uses a lindsay or GRS everyday it probably is but for the begginer or someone who is just starting out and not sure they want to invest in an expensive vise I would say buy this and save your money for an airgraver.

I love it.
Boy this thing is heavy. It_ great. It spins beautifully too. Worth every penny. I use almost every day. Haven_ found a better price either.

The vice is well made
The vice is well made. The attachments are the same as the GRC so if you wear them out you can upgrade the attachments by buying better-made ones.

With a little TLC it_ completely functional.
After reading the reviews I decided to grab one and was pleasantly surprised how good it actually is. It came with some light surface rust on the top vise, a little wd40 and a scotch bright pad took it off. You will need to clean and oil it up, lube the center bolt. Make sure the rotation break bolt is backed out if you want it to turn. Overall knowing it_ a GRS knockoff for the price I think it was a great purchase for starting engraving compared to the name brand ball vise of the same size. With a little tlc it is completely functional.

5 inch engraving block is the way to go, Jorge Piloto
Cheaper than the competition, you don't need to spend the extra hundreds on other brands. My block did not need any lube and a cleaning towel will suffice. Please note these metal items come covered in surface protection grease so just clean it off. If you are starting this hobby go for it. Also get yourself some shellac and watch plenty tutorial in youtube to better your skill. I spent 6 months looking for a cheaper option trust me I am cheap. You will love this block. Needless to say I very happy.

Own grs standard and this one. The differences are insignificantly small.
Great value for the money I also have the grs standard ball vise I ordered about thw same time and at this point have used both about the same amount. To summarize:. Is the grs better quality? Yes. Is this reflected in the price? Not even close!. Compared to the standard grs, 1 being terrible 10 being no observable difference.. weight : 10/10, performance: 9.5/10, finish and feeling: 8/10 ( diff not worse). Rubber base : 9.9/10. Size and shape 10/10, attachments 9/10. smoothness of adjustment 10/10. Rotation : 7.5/10.... I would say domt waste your money on grs this is good enough for a pro any day in my opinion. Idk maybe I got a good one but basically it's worth the money in this case you get way more value per dollar. Only get grs if you don't care about money or not working your own hrs is great product but so is this one.

Great for the price
Given that I'm not ready to afford the GRS Benchmate, I wanted to find something to use to set stones in rings. This tool seems as though it will work fine. It's heavy and the ball moves smoothly to just about any angle. So far I have only tried one set of attachments but am looking forward to trying more.
