The battery can be used, but the backlight will not always be on when the battery is only used. The unit of the parameters can be set, and you can set it according to your usage habits.

Dose this unit charge the batteries, and if so, what kind of batteries do you recommend?
The solar panel is only an auxiliary power supply and cannot directly charge the battery. It is recommended that you use AA batteries.

Does this station store the collected data?
This one has no Wi-Fi function and cannot be connected to the Internet, so it cannot save data. Only rainfall data can be saved. Rainfall can save hourly/daily/weekly/monthly/total rainfall, but other data cannot be saved.
