So, I've upgraded from a diode laser setup after reading about CO2 lasers and their cutting power (a diode laser does not cut well). After lots of research I decided to go for CO2 but on the cheap so to speak before I spend thousands of pounds on a big 100W laser - the K40 is an absolute bargain at £291 (advertised at £296 but you get a £5 joining discount).
I'm from the UK, I was initally worried it stated it was coming via Australia Post! This was not the case and around 5 days after ordering I got a huge parcel containing the K40 beast!
First thing I did was removed the weird spring-loaded stamp-holder thing (just need an allen key, can be a bit fiddly but easily removed) and threw away the weird blue plastic vent pipe thing and replaced with a proper AC vent pipe. I built a temporary bed using coach-bolts and an MDF board and once I got the focus spot on, this cuts through 3mm MDF and PLY like a hot knife through butter!
While this thing is not an off-the-shelf working machine, it will require some effort to get working to your own specifications, I am extremely impressed with the following: -
- electrical safety: earthed and wired correctly
- limit switched all present and working
- hinged cover safetly interlock installed so it will turn off the laser with the lid open
- the mirrors were all lined up correctly, it looks like Vevor sets up the machine before it is shipped!
I've had great fun with this and it is totally value for money at this price!
A few final thoughts...
- this thing will burn you or blind you if you don't take care, do your research and get some decent safety goggles!
-be prepared for many hours of tinkering, this is a good thing as you will learn to understand the machine - do lots of research on reddit, facebook etc. - there is lots of help out there!
