Rubber coating also reduces vibration transmitted from the cutting area through the crank arms to the user's hands. Lower vibration in longer drilling times means less cumulative hand and wrist fatigue, which directly helps maintain more consistent feed pressure throughout the entire shift. Chatter marks in bore walls and cutting-edge wear are primarily caused by inconsistent feed pressure; maintaining consistent pressure through each stroke produces cleaner holes and longer bit life for the complete six-piece kit.
The hollow boring bits are held in place with flat-sided drive engagement in a 3/4 in / 19.05 mm Weldon shank toolholder, which prevents the bits from slipping rotationally under the torque loads applied during large-diameter coring in structural steel. With this standard shank size, several manufacturers sell hollow-boring bits. It allows the operator to purchase bits outside the 12-26 mm range without having to buy into a proprietary tooling system and to expand beyond the 6-piece set that comes with the tool.
